Trips: Roatan, Honduras (Feb. 19 - 27, 2001)

Roatan, Honduras (February 19 - 27, 2001)
Just 40 miles long and four miles wide, Roatan is a sliver of land surrounded by an underwater fortress of coral. Considered the second-largest reef in the world, the beaches of Roatan sit less than 50 yards away from one of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World: the Belize Barrier Reef.

Naturally, the purpose of my trip was to swim with schools of fish, watching them dart in and out of an 80 coral wall. Since I don't have gills, I wisely signed up for some scuba lessons.

The most popular area of Roatan is called West-End. Here you'll find about a dozen dive shops along a one mile stretch of sandy road. It is here that I stayed for the duration of my trip, taking sanctuary in a paradise of underwater wonder, friendly locals, open-air bars, and beautiful sunsets.
